Discover in detail the methodology of the scrum

What is the Scrum methodology?

To put it in a very synthetic and simplified way, it is about a working methodology which implements certain practices and tools to develop complex projects in a short time.

It is very common to use it in self-managed and multidisciplinary teams since, due to its characteristics, the Scrum methodology focuses on the development of each part of a project, the delineation of roles within the team, control and monitoring mechanisms for each phase of the project.

Because immediacy, quick decision making, competitiveness, complex environments and multiple tasks prevail today, this way of working is used in organizations of various types. Although the Scrum methodology focuses on management activities, without specifying the practices of a particular profession, some have obvious relevance.

The Scrum methodology highlights organizations that need to complete complex processes in a short period of time, such as the development of new technologies and the software solutions. This is why the IT professions are of great importance in this field: specialists in cybersecurity and Big Data, software developers, Blockchain experts, Chief Technology Officer, etc.

Planning of the Scrum methodology: the phases of the process

Unlike other work processes, Scrum is characterized by phases of short periods (two to four weeks maximum) aimed at providing a complete result in each of them. This iterative development takes place in the following phases:

  • SprintThe first step is to select the most important requirements to be fulfilled in the following phases, so that they can be fulfilled in record time if the customer so requests. If the duration of this sprint is longer than a month, the feedback with the customer may be lost and the methodology loses its value.
  • Sprint planning: Once the sprint objectives have been determined, the team delimits the role of each member and defines the tasks on which each will work to develop the previously selected requirements. But the essence of Scrum lies in a work togetherThis is why a multidisciplinary, complementary and self-managed team is so important. The result of this phase is the sprint goal and the sprint backlog.
  • Daily meetingThe Scrum process: more than a phase in itself, it is a requirement of the Scrum process, as it is a short daily meeting (10 or 15 minutes). During these meetings, all team members will communicate the obstacles they encounter, as well as their perspective to enrich the achievement of the end goal of the sprint. So the problems can be solved faster.
  • Newspaper : At the end of each sprint, a meeting is held for a maximum of four hours, in which the customer participates. Here the team shows how what they've been working on works and the customer validates the changes made. This is how the sprint backlog is reviewed, new tasks are added, and depending on the outcome and goals, the next sprint is planned.
  • Sprint retrospective: In this part, which also takes place at the end of each sprint, the team presents the issues that were found during the development of the project, as well as what they were able to improve and what they will be able to apply to the project. future as a lesson.

Thus, the Scrum methodology facilitates a continuous improvement chain in which all components strive to achieve common goals, with time and limited goals in each phase. Thus, everyone is informed of what is happening at a given moment, can analyze the progress to detect problems and solve them as soon as possible.

Professional roles involved in the Scrum methodology

We have previously indicated that the Scrum methodology is not limited to the work of specific professionals. However, it is true that three very important roles stand out: Scrum Master, Product Owner and Developers.

Le Scrum Master assumes a management role, so it is usually played by a team leader or project manager. This is the person who makes sure that the techniques of the Agile Melee are correctly applied and that any problem that arises can be resolved.

Le Product owner is the project manager, who communicates the list of arrears and must reflect the vision of the product. This person can be the Product manager.

For their part, the developers are responsible for developing the product. This team is generally made up of a maximum of 10 people.
