Gérard Depardieu was born on December 27, 1948 in Châteauroux, France. He has worked in around 170 films since 1967. Known and appreciated for his portrayal of both gentle and masculine characters, he twice won the César for Best Actor as well as the Golden Globe for Best Actor in the movie Green Card. After being critically acclaimed for the lead role in Cyrano de Bergerac, which earned him an Oscar nomination, Depardieu starred in many big budget Hollywood films.
He is also Knight of the Legion of Honor and Knight of the National Order of Merit. Depardieu ran away from his home in his early teens and secured odd jobs as well as criminal activity. Depardieu, a teenager, eventually traveled to Paris, where he studied theater at the Théâtre National Populaire. His large and heavy build often won him roles of villain or thug. Depardieu experienced a career breakthrough in Going Places (1974). Two years later, he appeared in "1900" (1976) by Bernardo Bertolucci alongside Robert De Niro. Depardieu also starred alongside French legend Catherine Deneuve in The Last Metro (1980). He received praise for his work on this war drama, Truffant, and also won his first César Award, the French equivalent of an Academy Award, for best actor for his performance in the film.
Depardieu, who now enjoys a career spanning nearly five decades, remains relevant today. In 2012, he played a supporting role in the critically acclaimed drama Life of Pi and was portrayed in the drama Welcome to New York around the same time.
