An intensive and physically rigorous sport, boxing is known to be a very brutal sport. Punches, calculated blocks and frequent attacks are just a few examples of the regular trials that boxing is surrounded by. Among the fittest and toughest boxers who have dominated the boxing scene and achieved amazing feats, it can be said that few of them are among the best and greatest boxers in the world.

So who are the greatest boxers of all time? Is Muhammad Ali the greatest boxer of all time? You will agree with us that in all sports any list / ranking regarding the "greatest of all time" always comes down to controversy. What's even more interesting is the fact that we all have different opinions when it comes to rankings of all kinds. In boxing, the case is no different. Muhammad Ali is considered by experts and some boxing fans to be the greatest of all time. But is it? You will be surprised at the place occupied by Muhammad Ali in this ranking.

A recent list of the best boxers of all time, released by BoxRec, the official boxing records website, revealed a points system in which each boxer is rewarded based on their annual performance per division. Ranking is an accumulation of success in a boxer's career, regardless of the weight division, according to BoxRec's Martin Reichert.

Reichert said that “A boxer can get up to 200 extra points per year by beating No.1 or No.2 in all divisions. The best wins per year are offset by losses against lower ranked opponents in the reference year, the previous year and the following year. The best wins are rewarded much more than the average wins. Points per year are reduced to 1/2 for the loss of No.3, to 1/3 for the loss of No.4, 1/4 for the loss of No.5, etc. Thus, defeating # 11 only scores 1/10 of the victory over either # 1 or # 2.

While the algorithm seems like a very intuitive way to determine who is the greatest boxer of all time, many may disagree with it. However, Floyd Mayweather Jr agrees because in 2015 he placed himself at the top of the list of greatest boxers.

10. Julius Cesar Chavez

From 1980 to 2005, El Cesar del Boxeo as Julius Cesar Chavez is nicknamed "the king of boxing". He's been in 115 games in total, scoring 107 wins and losing just six times, while settling for a draw on two occasions. He won the WBC super featherweight title, the WBC light welterweight title and the IBF light welterweight title. Since 2010, Chavez has been a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

9. Oscar De La Hoya

At the age of 5 only, Oscar De La Hoya had ventured into the world of boxing before, as he progressed he created a very strong reputation for himself, thanks to his unique fighting style. He won titles in 6 different weight categories including super featherweight, lightweight and light welterweight. He played 45 games in his career, won 39 and lost 6.

8. Archie moore

A truly legendary boxer, Archie moore who was nicknamed The old mongoose in the last days of his career, had one of the longest careers in boxing. For 28 years he ruled the boxing scene. He is also the longest-serving light and heavyweight world champion which he held for 10 years. Moore has appeared in a total of 219 games throughout his career. He won 186 of those games, lost 23 and finished 10 in a draw.

7. Joe louis

An African-American athlete, celebrated nationally for beating German Max Schmeling in 1938, Joe Louis was nothing less than a phenomenal boxer. During his 17-year boxing career, he defended his title 25 times, which made him the oldest reigning heavyweight champion in the history of boxing. During his career, he played 69 matches, of which 66 won and only 3 lost.

6. Bernard hopkins

"The executioner " as Bernard hopkins was nicknamed, had a very interesting boxing career from 1988 to 2016. During those 28 years, Hopkins established himself as one of the toughest boxers in the world. He won the IBF middleweight title and was also the first boxer in history to become the reigning major title champion for the four major boxing sanctioning entities. In 2011, Hopkins became the the oldest boxer to ever win a world championship after winning the light heavyweight title at the age of 46. He played in 67 games, won 55, lost 8, drew 2 and ended 2 with a non-suit.

5. Sugar Ray Robinson

Since 25 years Sugar Ray Robinson captured the attention of the boxing world with his glorified boxing style. Even legendary boxer Mohammed Ali praised him calling himKing. Five times he won the middleweight championship and for five consecutive years he was welterweight champion. He fought in 202 games, won 175 of those games, lost 19 and drew 6, while 2 of his games ended in a no contest.

4. Muhammad Ali

One of the most recognizable names in the boxing world, Muhammad Ali is one of the most famous sportsmen of the twentieth century. His boxing exploits are incredible, but his socio-political views are even more respected. He won the heavyweight title, coming out of a career hiatus to win it back. Throughout his career, Ali has fought in a total of 61 matches, won 56 and lost 5.

3. Carlos monzon

"Shotgun“Carlos Monzon, as he was called, marked boxing with his unique style. His quick, powerful punches were so fierce they were feared so much in his day. For 7 years, he held the World Middleweight Championship, thanks to his constantly evolving style of boxing. Over the course of his career, Carlos has defended his title about 14 times. He played 100 games, won 87, lost 3, drew 9 and 1 ended in a draw.

2. Manny Pacquiao

One of the names in boxing that will stand out without a doubt, Manny Pacquiao ruled the boxing scene in the early years of the twenty-first century. He beat Oscar De La Hoya in a remarkable way in 2008, spending just 6 minutes in the ring. Pacquiao is famous for his fight of the century against Floyd Mayweather, which he lost. He has won several titles including featherweight, flyweight, welterweight and lightweight. He's been in 71 games, won 62, lost 7 and drew 2.

Known on social media for his extravagance and flamboyant lifestyle, Floyd mayweather jr is arguably one of the greatest boxers in history. He has won several titles since he started fighting in 1996. Some of the titles he has won include Super Featherweight, Lightweight and Welterweight. Although retired, he is coming out of retirement to fight, much to the delight of the fans. He has appeared in 50 matches and won them all, a feat no boxer has seen in the boxing world until now.
